Milestone 1: The +950 Series Price — Lakers' Biggest Playoff Underdog Since 1988

The Lakers are +950 underdogs to win this series, the largest playoff underdog price for the franchise since at least 1988 — as far back as the Sports Odds History database tracks. The previous franchise high was +650 against the San Antonio Spurs in 2013. The Lakers were also +550 underdogs against Houston in Round 1 earlier this postseason. LeBron's career context: only once has he been a bigger series underdog — +1200 with the 2006 Cavaliers against the Detroit Pistons (lost 4-2). Other comparable spots: +690 vs. Warriors in 2018 (swept 4-0), +600 vs. Celtics in 2008 (lost 4-3).

Milestone 2: The 15.5-Point Game 1 Spread — Biggest of LeBron's 1,600+ Game Career

The Lakers were 15.5-point underdogs in Game 1 — the largest spread LeBron James has faced across 1,622 regular season games and 298+ playoff games. Previous high: +12.5 points with the 2018 Cavaliers in Game 1 of the NBA Finals vs. Golden State (the "J.R. Smith Game" — lost 124-114 in overtime). Result: Lakers lost Game 1 by 18 points (108-90) and Game 2 by 18 points (125-107). Both games were closer than the final margins suggested.

Milestone 3: 0-6 vs. Thunder This Season — Complete Dominance

Regular season: Thunder went 4-0 against the Lakers, with three wins by at least 29 points. The Thunder covered the spread in all four games. Regular season average margin: Thunder +31.8 points per game. Playoffs: Thunder lead 2-0, winning both games by exactly 18 points each (108-90 in G1, 125-107 in G2). Combined: the Lakers have lost six straight to Oklahoma City this season by an average margin of 22.3 points per game. In 6 of the last 7 matchups dating back to the previous season, the Thunder have beaten the Lakers by double digits.

Milestone 4: The Historical Precedent — 2-26 When 13+ Point Underdogs in Game 1

Since the NBA merger, teams that were 13-point underdogs or more in Game 1 of a playoff series are just 2-26 straight up in that opening game. The only two outright wins: 1993 Lakers against Phoenix, and 1989 Warriors against Utah — both considered major outliers. Against the spread, those teams went 11-16-1 ATS in Game 1 — competitive but below expectations. Series outcome: of those 28 teams, only ONE went on to win the series — the 1989 Warriors. Every other team lost the series.

Milestone 5: 97% of Public Money on Lakers — The People's Underdog

Despite being +950 series underdogs, 97% of the betting money at BetMGM is on the Lakers to win the series. This is one of the most lopsided "public vs. oddsmakers" splits in recent playoff history. The public is overwhelmingly backing the Lakers — not because of logic, but because of LeBron and the Lakers brand. Fan psychology: this extreme split reveals the emotional power of the Lakers brand and LeBron's legacy — bettors are willing to wager on one of the greatest upsets in NBA history.

Milestone 6: The Missing 56.8 Points — Doing It Without Their Stars

The Lakers are playing without their two leading scorers from the regular season — Luka Dončić (33.5 PPG) and Austin Reaves (23.3 PPG) combined for 56.8 points, 13.8 assists, and 12.4 rebounds per game. Reaves has since returned but was out for much of Round 1. No team in the 2026 NBA playoffs has overcome a larger statistical void. The Lakers defeated the Rockets in Round 1 as +425 underdogs despite missing both Dončić and Reaves for significant stretches. Oklahoma City is also missing Jalen Williams (20.5 PPG on 61.5% FG before injury), yet their depth has absorbed the loss seamlessly.

Milestone 7: The 1989 Warriors — The Only Team That Did It

Only ONE team in NBA history has won a playoff series after being 13+ point underdogs in Game 1 — the 1989 Golden State Warriors, who upset the Utah Jazz. The 1989 Warriors: led by Chris Mullin, they were a 7-seed that swept the 2-seed Jazz 3-0 in the first round — one of the most shocking upsets in NBA history. The 1993 Lakers: the only other team to win Game 1 as a 13+ point dog — they beat the Charles Barkley-led Suns in Game 1 but lost the series in five. For the 2026 Lakers to win this series, they would need to accomplish something only ONE team has done in nearly 50 years of NBA playoff history.

By the Numbers: How Big Is This Underdog Gap?

Why the Lakers Believe

What They're Saying

"I have the most experience on the team and have the most playoff experience on the team so I know how a series can go. I just try to bleed that into them, bleed the confidence and tell them to go out and play."

LeBron James

"Everybody wants to talk about his age but he's still LeBron James. He's still capable of being the best player on the court any given night."

Alex Caruso (Thunder guard, on LeBron)

"We didn't lose because of the refs."

JJ Redick (Lakers coach, on the officiating) — acknowledging the Thunder were simply better in Game 2

"The Los Angeles Lakers are currently 16-point underdogs in Game 1 at the Oklahoma City Thunder. That would be the biggest underdog LeBron James has ever been in a playoff game in his career."

ESPN Insights

"Previous high was +12.5 with Cavs in Game 1 of 2018 NBA Finals (vs. GS)."

Ben Fawkes (betting analyst)

"+950 to beat Thunder in 2nd Round of NBA Playoffs. This is the biggest underdog series price the Lakers have been in a conference semifinal since at least 1988. 97% of money is on Lakers to win series at BetMGM."

John Ewing (betting analyst)

  2. 2006 Cavaliers vs. Pistons: +1200 underdogs (LeBron's first playoff run, lost 4-2)
  3. 1994 Nuggets vs. SuperSonics: #8 seed defeated #1 seed 3-2 — first 8-over-1 upset in NBA history
  4. 2007 Warriors vs. Mavericks: #8 seed "We Believe" Warriors upset 67-win #1 Mavericks 4-2
  5. 2011 Grizzlies vs. Spurs: #8 seed Grizzlies upset #1 Spurs 4-2
